First responders in Putnam County were called to the house on Drewville Road in Carmel at approximately 11:20 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 13, Mahopac Volunteer Fire Department spokesperson Jack Casey said.

According to Casey, the first crews arrived confirmed the fire, and called for:

  • Mutual Aid from Carmel Fire for a ladder truck;
  • A FASteam from the Yorktown Heights Volunteer Fire Department;
  • Tankers from the Mahopac Falls and Croton Falls fire departments;
  • Multiple units and paramedics from the Carmel Police Department;

Casey said that Mahopac Fire Chief Jim Stasiak took over at the scene, as first responders dealt with a single-family residence that was fully engulfed in heavy smoke with the occupants of the home who had safely evacuated the residence.

Interior crews made entry into the home with hand lines and a ladder crew opened up the roof to knock down the flames while Carmel Police officers secured the scene.

Officials said that the fire was brought under control in under an hour after attacking the blaze aggressively, with crews returning to service by 12:37 p.m. on Monday afternoon.

No injuries were reported, though the home suffered extensive smoke and water damage.

It is unclear what caused the fire, which remains under investigation.
